About Chhattisgarh

Chhattisgarh is one of the newest states of the nation. Carved out of southeastern Madhya Pradesh on November 1, 2000 by clubbing together the 16 districts whose primary language was Chhattisgarhi, Chhattisgarh has now become the tenth largest state in India with Raipur as its capital city. It is nestled between the states of Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh Orissa, Andhra Pradesh, Jharkhand, and Utter Pradesh

 

Geography & Climate

Interestingly the state is capped by hilly regions on its northern and southern borders while the central region is a fertile plain of Mahanadi and its tributaries.  The hot and humid tropical climate of Chhattisgarh is ideal for rice growing. The state depends on the monsoon rains to replenish its water resources. Almost 44% of Chhattisgarh is covered in lush deciduous forest comprising mainly of Sal trees. The Wild Water Buffalo is the state animal and the Hill Mayna, the state bird of Chhattisgarh.

Summer months are April to June with mercury hovering at 48 degrees centigrade, while late June is the start of the monsoon rains that give the state a much needed respite from scorching summer heat.  The ideal time to visit Chhattisgarh is the winter months – November to January – when the temperatures are pleasing and humidity is lower. 

 

Population & Religious demography

Primarily a Hindu state, Chhattisgarh’s 80% of its 21 million population is residing in rural and forest areas, leaving the urbanization or city dwellers to just 20%. Of the total population of the state, more than 54 percent are officially OBC, 34 percent belong to scheduled tribe and 12 percent to Scheduled Cast.

 Hindi is the official language of Chhattisgarh, spoken in the urban areas and for the administrative purpose, whereas Chhattisgarhi, the Hindi dialect, is spoken across the state. 

 

Economy

In recent years Chhattisgarh has seen a rapid growth in its GDP, around 12%. This rise in the growth has been primarily contributed to the factors like agriculture and Industrial development. The state is rich in natural resources and has started to open up its resources for industries and better agriculture

 

Administration

Chhattisgarh state is made up of 27 districts and 10 municipal corporations. There is a Legislative Assembly in the state that has strength of 90 members. Chhattisgarh has good number of representation in Lok Sabha with 11 members and 5 members in Rajya Sabha
