It was the nomads who first came out with the innovative idea of the circus and performed it wherever the pitched their tent. But now it has became well organized business and whenever a circus party pitches its tent, the whole locality there throbs with excitement and feels an irresistible attraction towards it.

 During the last winter season my visit to the Gemini Circus at the park Circus Maidan in Kolkata was indeed a delightful experience. We had out tickets for the evening show. As we entered I was amazed to find the place packed up with old and young alike. We made our way through the sea of humanity and waited anxiously for the show to start. ‘  tri… ing’, the shrill clamoring of the bell made the spectators silent. The pervading excitement, the emphatic band, the glare and glitter of light and tinsel, the blinding rays of the flood-lights—all seemed to transport me into a temporary world of fantasy. Then the lights dimmed and amongst a nerve wracking excitement, the action began.

With the entrance of the ring master in a bright red coat the spectators broke into applause. Almost instantly, a gigantic creature came striding along, barking its trunk an elephant! It was followed by many others. What astounding tricks they performed - that of a coconut with the trunk to worship the Doily. I was in my dream world when a bear cyclist came jostling along. Then a battery of clowns appeared clothed in peculiar shades of ill fitting garments and painted faces. Their antics evoked our laughter. Then came the dancers who swung high up, walked on tight ropes and danced to the accompaniment of music. A monkey came riding a rickshaw pulled by a parrot. The juggling of the jugglers and the elephant walking over the plank placed on the chest of the mahout-all these were watched by us will awe and administration. But the centre of attraction was nerve wrecking, spine chilling performance of a motorcyclist who went up a high circular track and then came down. This daredevil act held my breath and I uttered prayers lest he should fall. The last but not the least was the show of trapeze. The acrobats in dazzling dresses hung on the suspended swinging bars and swing to another synchronously of course the jokers were there along with them for the comic relief.

After that all the artist came to the arena and bowed a final salute and big top tent with its wonderful colors pulsated with thunderous applause. But a tough I felt sad that the show was over, I felt glad that I had witnessed such a wonderful show.
