A Short Trip To Goa

Goa during monsoon is a beautiful sight to behold. I recently travelled from Manipal to Goa which is a 5 hour train journey. I had travelled long back to Goa during December and it was way too crowded back then. But this time there was an air of peace which I found very charming. First we got down in Madgaon where you can rent bikes for a cheaper price. Then we rode the bike till calangute which was the primary destination that we wanted to reach. It is roughly a 2 hour drive from Madgaon to calangute. On the way there were intermittent showers of rain. The temperature was pretty average and the showers of rain only helped in cooling it down.

When we reached Calangute we booked a room and prices were comparatively cheaper since it was during the off- season. The season starts at around December and this was during august. During the season there are usually a lot of people and everything is so congested which can get extremely annoying sometimes. Goa is mainly known for its burgeoning tourism industry with an estimated arrival of up to 10 Lakh tourists from abroad. But that is usually during the season and this time there only a few were scattered around here and there.

Once we booked a room we went out to the Calangute beach and were disappointed to find that most of the shacks were closed. Shacks over here are the most attractive part because the idea of looking at the beach with a drink in hand sounds very appealing to most people. So we went to Baga beach which is about ten minutes away from Calangute if you walk.

There were no shacks open in Baga beach either so we had to drive all the way for two hours till Anjuna. It was somewhat the same there too but Curlies was open. It is a restaurant which also hosts parties on occasions. It is one of the few places in Goa that stays open throughout the year. I had just come here for a day and the last time I had explored all the churches in the south as well as north Goa and this time I had made it a point to explore the beaches here. But all in all it was a minor disappointment because most of the things were closed. The weather was amazing and so were the people and their hospitality but I went away feeling a little empty. Something was missing.
