A Review Of Chashme Baddoor

By now, Indian cinema has seen two Chashme Baddoors: Sai Paranjpye’s and David Dhawan’s. While Paranjpye’s Chashme Buddoor came nearly 31 years ago and is now considered a classic, Dhawan’s Chashme Baddoor is the remake of the same. Notice the change in alphabet from ‘U’ to ‘A’ in Buddoor! ‘U’ for universal and ‘A’ for adult. While Paranjpye’s film displayed honest simplicity in everything from the romance between Siddharth (Farooque Shaikh) and Neha (Deepti Naval), to Jai and Omi’s attempts to split them up, Dhawan’s, on the other hand, is laden with corny, double meaning rhyming words and couplets.

The film revolves around a trio of friends - Sid (Ali Zafar), Jai (Siddharth) and Omi (Divyendu Sharma), who share a house on rent in Goa but never pay a penny. And Josephine (Lilette Dubey), – the house owner doesn’t complain either. The trio depends on Joseph Furtado (Rishi Kapoor) for food, for he never asks them for money.

The film rolls into action when Seema (Taapsee Pannu) when Jay and Omi try to woo her but fail miserably. Then, as it was scripted, Semma bumps into Sid and they fall in love. They sing around and do the stereotype. But Sid’s romance is short lived. His friends, Jay and Omi poison his heart by telling disparaging things about Seema.

Go figure out what happens next, if only you wish to. The film isn’t bad given you are an ardent follower of Dhawan.

Comparisons come invariably even if you do not want to. Ali Zafar has tried too hard but fails to charm. He doesn’t stand any close to Farooque Sheikh. Casting someone as forgettable as Taapsee Pannu to fit in for Deepti Naval is outright a blunder. The only two who seem to rescue the film with their performance and screen presence is Siddharth and Divyendu Sharma. Rishi Kapoor and Lilette Dubey, as usual, are perfect.

Dhawan retains the storyline from the original but misses the effortlessness of Paranjpye. He is, as usual, true to his audience and expecting something sublime from him is groundless and quite possible a really unreasonable thing to do.
