A Cooked Up Life

A sweet smile that hides the gamut of emotions on job – this is the story of young Savitha, aged 27, fondly known as ‘Akka’ by all students here at the Manipal Institute of Communication [MIC] Canteen. Her job involves cooking and handling the dexterity and skills of a variety of dishes. The story behind her everyday life is very striking and captivating. Quite content working at MIC along with her husband Madhukar, she is particularly happy about the fact that the kids are well behaved and aren’t rude when they talk to her.

Hailing from Maharashtra, she came to Manipal and made this place her home. She studied until the 12th grade in arts but discontinued and began working in her aunt’s beauty parlour for three years before getting married. She said that she learnt most of the work- hairstyling to eye brow shaping to facials- just by seeing her aunt do the same so skilfully.  In addition to this she loved the part of the job where had to apply henna and tie saris for the various customers.

The whole happy face still smiling holds back the tears in the red eyes, comes back to the present as she talked about her married life. Suffering the pain and setback of four miscarriages she said that she could never conceive, for if she tries to, her womb, unable to carry the weight of the baby rejects the foetus. Adding to her woes she says that she sometimes has to bear the brunt of a little physical violence from her husband when he drinks and comes back home.

The story of her life takes a nostalgic turn when she said, “When I am alone at home, all the thoughts come back to me like a bolt from the past. I cannot share this with anyone and not even back home.”

The womanly grace and charm rebuilds on her face as she expresses her joy saying, “Hubby is actually very sweet. He realises his mistake and apologises for assaulting.” She shyly added that he usually cooks for her or brings red roses as reconciliation. She said that she is very lucky because he understands the problems and never complains of not having kids.

The work place has been decent to cover up all the grief. “The boss is very good.  He is a kind man, the type who would help you even at the dead of midnight,” she added. She also said that making a decent life has not been all that difficult because they get a decent pay up to eleven or twelve thousand. She finally said, “Pyaar aur shaadi me sab theek hai!” [Everything’s fair in love and marriage] and signed off the interview.
