If we think about homes two decades back, smoke and firewood fill our thoughts - Unpleasant smell of fries, fruits and groceries, heap of dishes and containers, things placed here and there without proper arrangement and electric equipments placed easily visible and noticeable. Now, if we enter a modern kitchen, we won’t find anything on the countertop except a few decorative dishes. Even hob, refrigerator, mixer, grinder and oven are placed in inbuilt cabins, not visible from outside. So kitchen looks spacious filled with light and air, and arranged like a living room – perfectly neat! Kitchen has witnessed a lot of reformations in the past two decades or so. Now music systems, television screens, study table and breakfast table have also become a part of the kitchen. If the lady of the home is working at home, she may place her PC in kitchen too!  

Kitchen is normally designed in ‘C’, ‘L’ or ‘U’ shape. A small corridor type kitchen is best for a working lady while a spacious kitchen may suit a house wife. After all, it depends on one’s preference to choose a particular kitchen design. Nowadays people are interested in Vasthu shastra too, thus providing hobs and wall shades according to vasthu principles.  

Great importance is given to storage spaces in modular kitchen so that nothing appears visible from outside. Colourful plates and variety design spoons have now conquered modular kitchen. You can prefer any shape for kitchen. But refrigerator, hob and sink should form a work triangle so that house wife can spend time in kitchen effectively. She can reduce to-and-fro walk in between, if triangle work design of these three objects is used in kitchen. It is your preference to place a breakfast table inside the work triangle or not. In some kitchens, pullout trays are placed at any corner of countertop to be provided as breakfast table. It can save a lot of space too.

Kitchen should be filled with sunlight and air. It’s better to provide a window near sink and garden outside. Now it’s possible to give artistic look to kitchen’s interior by colourful trays and glass countertops. If everything is chosen in matching shades, no doubt your kitchen will appear like your living room.
