2013 - International Year Of Water Co-operation

Diya lives with her mother in a hill top in a small hut. They don’t have a well or any water connection. To get water they have to walk at least half an hour to reach the bottom. After bath and washing clothes, Diya collects water and it is really tedious to carry it through hill slope every day. Very often, she reaches late at school, spends a lot of study time to collect water from valley too. She often thinks a lot about her difficulties faced due to the non-availability of water.

It is not the case of one child or two. In many parts of the world, people face such bad situations. Water is one among the basic necessities of man. But what if, it is scarce and water resources are dried up? It is necessary to make common man aware about the importance and availability of water and problems faced by people all over the world. For that purpose, 2013 has been declared as International Year of Water Co-operation. It was decided by UNO in 2010 December.

3-in-1 magic

Water is composed of one oxygen atom and 2 hydrogen atoms. It is a tasteless odourless liquid. Though considered as a colourless liquid, it shows a slight blue colour if taken in large quantity. It is transparent through which sunlight passes and takes the shape of any container in which it is taken. It becomes solid ice at zero degrees and evaporates as vapour at 100 degree celsious. So, it is a unique substance that exists in three states of matter – solid, liquid and gas.

Drinking water for everyone

Drinking water should be available to all. If there is scarcity of water in a particular region, it’s the duty of the rest to provide helps to make water available. Through machines, water can be collected in tanks and made available to such needful people. Though water is plenty, it’s the duty of every one of us not to waste even a single drop or pollute it. International Year of Water Cooperation also gives such messages. Also full cooperation is to be given by nations to ensure availability of water to people of all parts of the world.

In 1992, UNO put forward a suggestion related to environment and environmental development. In that meeting, decision was taken to dedicate one day for water. Thus in 1993 March 22, it was celebrated World Water Day. But this year, a full year is reserved for water and water conservation program, a nice approach.
