Sree Krishna Swamy Temple Neyyattinkara

 

Neyyattinkara Sree Krishna Swamy Temple is a famous hindu temple dedicated to god Krishna located in the heart of the Neyyattinkara town. The temple has a great historic importance also. The divine idol installed here represents the enchanting form of Unnikannan (baby Krishna). The offerings given to Neyyattinkara Unnikannan is  Thrikayilvenna  (butter).

According to the legend, the Travancore King Marthanda Varma once hid inside the hollow trunk of a jack fruit tree in the temple surrounding to escape from his enemies at the time of the war against the eight nair chieftains (ettuveetil pillamar). From there the king prayed lord Krishna for helping him from enemies. At that time unnikannan appeared in front of him and asked him to hide in hollow trunk in the jack tree. The jack tree called 'Ammachi plavu'   still being preserved in the Shri Krishna Swamy Temple in the town Neyyattinkara.

This temple was built by Marthanda Varma in the year 1755 and was built in a kerala style architecture. The walls of the Sanctum are painted and decorated with beautiful artistic sculptures depicting the life of Shree Krishna.  The main attraction of Neyyattinkara Sree Krishna Temple is, it displays a beautiful scene from Bhagavat Gita (Lord Krishna teaching Arjuna) in front of main Gopuram.

The main festival of the temple is on the Malayalam month Meenam.The festival ends with aaraatt which is on Rohini star of month meenam. On this day the deity is taken out of the temple, and is dipped in water, in the nearby Neyyar River. On the Navarathri day, three deities Shri Kumaraswami, from Kumarakoil temple, Shri Sarawathi Devi and Shri Munnuutti Nanga will rest at the temple on their way of Sri Padmanaba Swamy Temple, Trivandrum. These three deities stay in the Sree Krishna temple overnight and will leave on the next morning.

"Neyyattinkara Kannan" is a well famous elephant in the temple.Aruvippuram the holy land of Sree Narayana Guri  in Neyyattinkara nearest to Sree Krishna Temple. Neyyar Dam and Wildlife Sanctuary are nearest tourist spot. Neyyattinkara is about 28 kilometers from Trivandrum city.
