Ajanta Ellora - The Caves Designated As World Heritage Site

The caves of Ajanta and Ellora are situated in Aurangabad district of Maharashtra state in India. These caves of India display the finest paintings, architecture ans sculptures of Buddhist cultural movement.  Ajanta caves and Ellora caves have been designated as the World Heritage site since 1983. These represent some of the lavish architectural heritage illustration of ancient India. There are around 34 caves at Ellora and 29 caves at Ajanta. Astonishingly, these caves were in an obscurity state till 19th century. In the year 1819, British army officer who named Jhon Smith, fortuitously discovered the caves of Ajanta.

Ajanata caves are situated deep within the Sahyadri hills above the Waghora River near Aurangabad city. All caves date back to the period between 200 BC and 250 AD. From the mountain rocks, the caves were carved out. It is believed that artists had used some simple tools like chisel and hammer to make good-looking figures that adorn these caves walls. These caves are the progress indicator made by that era artists. A few amazing sculptures and paintings can be seen inside Ajanta caves the depictions like 'the thousand Buddhas', 'the birth of Buddha', 'seventeen Jatakas', and so on are the most wonderful sculptures and murals instances that man can make. The caves architecture of Ajant caves has a well defined form. Ajant caves were developed during two different phases one is Mahayana phase and the other is Hinayana phase.

Ellora caves were formed by engraving a basaltic hill sides. These caves belong to the era 350 AD to 700 AD. Here the caves symbolize three faiths like Hinduism, Jainism and Buddhism. From 34 ellora caves 12 are towards the south are dedicated to Buddhism, 17 at the center to Hinduism and five towards the north are dedicated to Jainism. Like any other monument of Buddist, the Ellora hasa serenity and grandeur, which is Buddhism integral part? in some caves, images from faiths of both Hinduism amd Buddhism can be seen under similar roof.

The India Ajanta and Ellora caves are considered to be the artistic legacy monuments and this heritage is being preserved so that it can inspire and enrich the future generation’s lives.
