Sasan Gir Travel Guide

One of the famous wildlife sanctuaries of India is at Sasan Gir in the Indian state of Gujarat. This is popularly known as Gir National Forest. This was established in the year 1965 and occupies a total land area of 1412 square kilometers for the national park and another 1153 square kilometers for the sanctuary. This is anatural habitat for several species of animal life many of which are rare and even extinct in other parts of the world. These species have been given their natural habitat here amidst full and complete protection. They have seen regeneration over the years with several young ones being born. They have also oftentimes being sent across to other zoos and protected animal reserves.

One of the main attractions of Sasan Gir is its population of Asiatic lions. This is their only home where they have been protected and saved from the face of extinction. More importantly there has also been an improvement of their condition when an increase in their numbers was last recorded. There are several other species of carnivorous animals that are also seen here among whom leopards, striped hyenas, golden jackals, sloth bears, Indian palm civets and different species of cats are the most common.

You will also see a wide range of herbivorous animals like hare, sambar, four horned antelopes, blackbucks and chinkara. There is as many as 37 species of reptiles that are seen here.

There are more than 300 species of birds that are also seen here. Apart from the indigenous ones that are from India and the region there are also those that are migratory birds. Some of them stop here en route their journey somewhere else whilst there are others that even stop here to lay eggs and breed.

Just like the animals and species of wildlife here there is similar diverse and bounteous natural vegetation that will be seen at the Sasan Gir. These are of different varieties and types of trees, plants and creepers. You will also find a large variety in the flowers that grow here. Despite their wild habitats and growth these are colorful and striking in their appeal. The national park is also a habitat for a wide variety of insects.

This is truly one of the most unique natural habitats for Indian animal life and attracts thousands of tourists to see them every year. The best time to visit Sasan Gir would be all through the year as each season brings forth a new look to the place. However the summer months are usually rough with a high average temperature. The winter season is dry and cool while the monsoons are usually a time for new growth of the park vegetation. There is accommodation facility available in close proximity and maintained by the Gujarat government.
