The India Gate is a war memorial located on the Rajpath to commemorate the death of 90,000 Indian soldiers in the First World War and in the Afghan Fiasco of 1919. The foundation of this war memorial was laid by the Duke of Connaught on 10th February 1921. Sir Edwin Lutyens designed this and was completed in 1931.

 

The height of this sandstone monument is 160 feet and houses an Eternal Flame in the memory of the deceased soldiers in the 1971 Indo-Pakistan war. This is called as Amar Jawan Jyoti.
