The town of Kumbakonam is located in the Thanjavur district of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The town is flanked by two important rivers in the north and the south respectively – the Cauvery River and the Arasalar River. The town is resplendent in the glorious temples that are located here and built during the rule of the Chola Dynasty. It was an important center during the medieval age and has several historical monuments to corroborate.

This is a town of many temples that are dedicated to various Gods and Goddesses and is thus also visited for worship by several thousands of pilgrims and tourists each year. Among the 188 temples that are found here the most important and significant ones are Sarangapani Temple, the Ramaswamy Temple and the Kumbeswara Temple.

You can take a trip to see the unique architecture and skilful craftsmanship of the Sarangapani Temple. It is as high as twelve storeys. It was built in the 15th century by scions of the Nayak Dynasty.

If you visit the Ramaswamy Temple you will see that the deity who is worshipped here is Lord Rama. There are stories and depictions from the Ramayana that are also seen in the sculptures and carvings of the walls and pillars of the structure. This temple was also built by Raghunatha Nayak in the 16th century.

The Kumbeswara Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is an important place of worshjip for the followers of Shaivite faith as this is the oldest among all temples here. This temple was built in the 7th century by the Cholas. You will find a tank at the center that is also common with the temples of other regions in the state. This tank of water is considered to be sacred and used for temple purposes. Every twelve years pilgrims get to take a holy dip in this during the time of the Mahamaham festival.

The nearest airport to Kumbakonam is at Trichy. There are regular flights that are scheduled from here to Chennai and several other places of the region. You will be able to avail several bus and taxi services from Trichy to Kumbakonam. You can also avail flights from Chennai airport, Madurai airport and Bangalore airport.

Kumbakonam is also connected with several places through an extensive railways and train services. You will find a regular schedule of trains that are available and connect the place with the rest of the country. There are plenty of hotels that are available at Kumbakonam where you can stay.  These are all of a high standard of services and quality facilities. The prices vary among different establishments and you will surely find one that suits your budget.
