This fascinating medieval city was founded in 1459 by Rao Jodha, a Rajput king who belonged to the valiant Rathore clan. The Mehrangarh Fort, a massive structure constructed on a 150m high hill has within its confines a number of palaces, galleries, a museum temples etc. It was built by the then chief of the Rathore clan-Rao Jodha. The Umaid Bhavan Palace is another mesmerizing palace that was built in the 20thcentury, a part of which has now been converted to a hotel and a museum.  A visit to the Mehrangarh fort is a must.


A royal monument, the Jaswant Thada lies just at a close proximity to the Mehrangarh Fort. It is built of white marble and was mainly constructed to commemorate Maharaja Jaswant Singh. The monument displays some rare portrait of various rulers of Jodhpur.


Jodhpur is beautified all the more by the sprawling Mandore Garden that is located just at a distance 2 km from Jodhpur. The garden houses some splendid cenotaphs, temples and sculptures. Mahamandir Temple situated at a distance of 2km from Jodhpur is famed for the intricately carved pillars and various sculptures. Other places worth your visit in and around Jodhpur are Osian, Dhawa, Nagaur, Rohet Fort, Khimsar and Luni. They lie at a close distance from the glorious city of Jodhpur and hence can be easily reached.


Jodhpur has to its credit a number of hotels that are designed to render comfort to the visitors during their stay there. You can put up at such heritage hotels like Karni Bhavan, Ajit Bhavan, Jhalamand Garh, Balsamand Lake Palace etc. Various travel agencies offer tour packages to help you explore the city in all its vicinity.
