Jai Garh Fort in Jaipur
Distance from Jaipur : 14 km;
Time to Reach from Jaipur : 0 h, 21 m
Jaigarh Fort is situated on the Cheel Ka Teela hills in the Aravalli ranges. It is closer to the Amber fort and Moata Lake. Jaigarh Fort was built by Sawai Jai Singh III in 1726. This fort is also called Victory Fort.
Though Jaigarh Fort and Amber Fort lie in close proximities they are two separate entities. However they are connected by passages. Jaigarh Fort was principally designed to tighten the security and so it is not artistic like other forts. However the architecture of medieval India is worth seeing. It has its own cannon foundry, temples, towers and granary.
The notable feature of the fort is the huge cannon called Jaivana. This is considered to be the largest cannon in the world. This was fired only one and it could hold 100 kilograms of gunpowder. It covers a distance of 35 kilometers.
The water harvesting structures are well planned and the water was conveyed through the canals and stored in three underground storage tanks. The biggest tank could store 6 million gallons of water. There was a search for the treasures of the fort during the time of Indira Gandhi. However nothing was found there.
There is an armory chamber that displays the weapons like swords, guns, shields and muskets. The museum situated near the Awami Gate showcases the photographs of the royal people and the stamps and other items used by them.
