Need a break from the humdrum of daily life? Spend a lazy holiday on the beach of Gopalpur in the midst of a crowd of coconut groves, thickets and soft sand. The blue waters of the sea and the overwhelming waves stimulate our senses making us forget the fret and fever of life. It is definitely an ideal place to rejuvenate and unwind yourself and seek solace. The place is endowed with a tranquillity undefined and in the recent times has earned the reputation of being one of the most immaculate beaches in Orissa. It is situated at a distance of 16km from Berhampur and if you want to while away your leisure time then visiting the place will be definitely worthwhile. It is basically an amazing village perched on the sea shore. It owes its name to the 18th century temple that was dedicated to Krishna (Gopalpur). Once upon a time during the British Raj, it was a prominent sea-port transformed today into a serene place.

Though the beach and the sea at Gopalpur are a major attraction there are some other places near Gopalpur like Dhavaleswar, Lighthouse, Taptapani and Chandragiri.  

At a distance of 67km from Gopalpur lies Taptapani, a place of hot water springs. The hot water is known to have some curative power that soothes away all your aches and pains. There is a Tibetan refugee village known by the name of Chandragiri, situated at a distance of 36km south of Taptapani that is also a great stopover. The place has a number of temples and is known well for its Lhasa Apso dogs. An enchanting view is proffered from the Lighthouse hence; a visit to the place is a must. It will surely be an exhilarating experience for you. 15kms from Gopalpur will take you to Dhavaleshwar another beach which is also an abode of a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. If time permits you can even visit the Chilka Lake which lies at a distance of 45km. Considered to be the biggest salt water lake, it is spread over an area of 1, 100sq.km and is also credited to be one of the busiest fishing centre.

Here you can even go for some adventure sports like fishing, swimming, sailing and yachting. You will get sumptuous seafood here and you are sure to have a great time gorging on some cheap yet delicious sea food. Visiting Gopalpur during the month of December and January will give you the opportunity to catch a glimpse of the beach festival that is held every year.

The serene beach is definitely a great place for a quiet sojourn, far from the madding crowd.
