Yogendra Singh Yadav Biography

Yogendra Singh Yadav is the youngest person to ever be awarded the Param Vir Chakra, the highest military honour in India. He is a soldier and a Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) of the Indian army, aged 35 at present. He was given Param Vir Chakra at the age of 19, following his bravery in Kargil War 1999, becoming the youngest person to receive this award. He played a significant role in recapturing Tiger Hill in Kargil and killed 8 Pakistani soldiers too. It was initially announced that he has been honoured posthumously, later to find that he survived, and undergoing treatment at a hospital following serious injuries. Yadav’s bravery has inspired many Bollywood films like Hrithik Roshan starrer Lakshya. His role was enacted by Manoj Vajpayee for J. P. Dutta’s LOC Kargil.

Yogendra Singh Yadav was born on 10 May 1980 in Bulandshahr District, Uttar Pradesh. His father has also been a part of Kumaon Regiment, Indian military and has participated in 1965 and 1971 Indo-Pakistan wars. During the Kargil wars in 1999, he was assigned as one among the 22 Grenadiers of the commando platoon 'Ghatak’. The Mission given to them was to capture three strategic bunkers on Tiger Hill situated at a height of 16,500 foot.  Yadav was assigned to lead his team members.

The group installed ropes to the cliff and climbed up the hill. On the halfway they got attacked by Pakistani soldiers and lost two lives. Yogendra too was hit by three bullets in his groin and shoulder. Yet he managed to climb the top. He killed 4 Pakistani soldiers at the first bunker and rest of his army men too reached the top. He killed four more soldiers at second bunker and thus the group conquered Tiger Hill. There were two Yogendra Singh Yadavs in a team of 22 men and at first ‘our hero’ was declared dead and award given posthumously. The faux pas came to light when the wife of PVC Yadav protested to the Base Hospital authorities, when her much alive husband was declared dead.
