Yandamuri Veerendranath Biography

Yandamuri Veerendranath is a popular novelist of Telugu language whose writings have influenced younger generations.  Through his works he deals with socially relevant subjects and themes like poverty, prejudices, and superstitions. He is also known as a playwright, novelist, film director, and personality development motivator. In 1982, he received Sahitya Academy Award for his work - Raghupati Raghava Rajaram. As a film personality he has also won several Nandi awards. He received Nandi Award as Best Director for the serial Vennello Adapilla in 1996 and as Best Socially Relevant Film Director for Vijayam vaipu payanam in 2002. He published 50 novels; his noted works being Vennello Aadapilla and Antarmukham.

 

Yandamuri Veerendranath was born in Rajolu, East Godavari. His schooling was done at several places including Khammam, Kakinada, Rajahmundry, Jammalamadugu, Anantapuram and Hyderabad. Later he graduated in commerce from Kakinada and completed Chartered Accountancy at the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India.

 

In Telugu literature during the 1960s and 1970s, female writers completely dominated the scene as there were female readers most. So, most of the male writers used to choose female names as pen names. But he published his first novel "Rushi" without using any pen name. He came to limelight with Tulasi Dalam which became a bestseller. Later he went on to publish 50 novels and established as a popular male writer of present times. His personality-development book Vijayaniki 5 Metlu (Success in Five Steps) is one of his most noted works.

 

He founded Saraswati Vidya Peetham in Kakinada for the education of poor tribes. Many of his novels have been made to feature films in Telugu. He has also directed two movies - "Agnipravesam" and “Stuvartpuram Police Station" based on his novels. But both movies were failures. Hence he concentrates most of his time to writing.
