Yamini Krishnamurthy Biography

Yamini Krishnamurthy is an exponent of Bharatnatyam and Kuchipudi, south Indian classical dance forms. Indian government has awarded her with Padma Shree (1968) and the Padma Bhushan (2001) for her contributions to Indian art. She has also received Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship. Sri Jyoti Krishnamurthy, an accomplished Carnatic singer is Yamini’s sister. Yamini dedicated her full life to art and still remains unmarried. According to critics’ opinion, her dancing reflects rhythm personified. Her autobiography titled, “A Passion For Dance” was published in the year 1995.

Yamini Krishnamurthy was born in Madanapalli, Andhra Pradesh on December 20, 1940. As she was born on a full moon day, she was given the name, Yamini Poornatilaka by her grandmother. She was brought up in Chidambaram, Tamil Nadu. Yamini began her training in bharatnatyam. She learnt this art form from Rukmini Devi Arundale’s Kalakshetra, a leading school for the dance form. Later she studied from gurus, Kanchipuram Ellappa Pillai and Thanjavur Kittappa Pillai. Her debut performance was in Chennai in the year 1957. Very soon she became a celebrity and started learning Kuchipudi as well. During 1960’s Indrani Rehman and Yamini Krishnamurthy were the top two names of Kuchipudi in south India. During that time, Kuchipudi was named as a filmy dance or Koothu and was not conferred by Sangeet Natak Akademi as a classical art form.

She later learned Odissi from Pankaj Charan Das and Kelucharan Mohapatra. She also learnt Carnatic music and Veena, a little bit. Yet she focused on Bharatnatyam and Kuchipudi only. She played a significant role during 70’s and 80’s to popularize these two art forms worldwide by conducting stage shows in many foreign countries. In 1990 she opened her own dance studio, Yamini School of Dance, in Delhi. She has been given the title, Asthana narthaki (Resident dancer) by Thirumala Thirupathi temple.
