Y. G. Mahendra Biography

Y. G. Mahendra is a dramatist, actor, singer, playwright and comedian of Tamil language. He has worked both in movies as well as stage plays and is the son of veteran theatre artist, G. Parthasarathy – regarded as one of the pioneers of modern Tamil drama. His mother is Rajalakshmi Parthasarathy, founder and dean of Padma Seshadri Bala Bhavan group of schools. Mahendra is also the cousin of Bollywood actress Vyjayanthimala and the brother-in-law of Rajinikanth. His daughter was married to legendary Tamil actress Savithri's grandson.

Y. G. Mahendran was born on 9 January 1950 in Chennai. Hailing from a family of stage-lovers, Mahendran too was associated with theatre from his school days. He played the part of comedian in school plays. He studied at Don Bosco Matriculation School, Egmore. Later he studied Chemical Engineering at A. C. College of Technology, Univ. Madras, Guindy and took MBA as well. During his early teens, he joined his father's drama troupe, the United Amateur Artists. Very soon, he became one of known actors of the city. In 1971, he debut movies through K. Balachander’s Navagraham. Though the movie was an average at box office, Mahendra’s nasal accent was funny and impressed audience which helped him to get more comic roles.

 
In a career spanning to more than 4 decades, he appeared in about 200 feature films. He played supporting and character roles in most of these movies. He acted with Rajinikanth in films like Pokkiri Raja, Paayum Puli, Shri Raghavendra and Veera. Aside Kamal Hassan, he appeared in Apoorva Raagangal, Neeya, Guru and many more movies. In parallel, he setup business in Industrial Ceramics. But later he sold the firm to return back to movies. Thalaivaa, Marupadiyum Oru Kadhal and Venghai are his recent movies.
