Wazir Ali Biography

Syed Wazir Ali, also referred to as Wazir Ali was a former Indian cricketer who played test matches for India. He was one of the early cricketers who played for India. He was a right-handed batsman and a medium pace bowler, associated with first class cricket and test matches for India. Throughout his career he played 121 First class matches and 7 tests. He scored a magnificent 7212 runs in first class cricket while 237 runs in test matches. 42 runs - is the highest score in international career. His brother Nazir Ali, and son Khalid Wazir are also former cricketers. Both have played test matches for India.

 

He was born on 15 September 1903 in Jullundur (Jalandhar), Punjab in British India. As a cricketer in domestic cricket, he played for Southern Punjab in the Ranji Trophy and Muslims in the Bombay Pentangular. One of the early cricketers from India, he played in all the Tests that India played before the Second World War – indeed a unique achievement. He was active in domestic cricket since early 1930s. He along with C.K. Nayudu is regarded as legendary figures of Indian cricket during its early days. However he played second fiddle to Nayudu in most of his matches.

 

His best score in First class matches is 268 runs not out for Indian University Occasionals in 1935, which was the highest score in Indian FC matches then. 1938 to 1939 Ranji Trophy final against Bengal Cricket Team are among his most memorable innings of his first class career. Ali captained India of Colonial Team, in two unofficial Tests against an Australian XI in the mid-1930s. After partition, he migrated to Pakistan. But he died of penury in 1950.
