Wasiq Khan Biography

Wasiq Khan is a well-established art director and production designer, best known for the movies - That Girl in Yellow Boots, Black Friday, Aamir, Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela, Gulaal, Wanted, Raanjhanaa, Debangg and Gangs of Wasseypur. He is associated with both mainstream cinema as well as realistic ones. His association with Anurag Kashyap has delivered many critically acclaimed movies. No Smoking, Ladies vs Ricky Bahl, Tanu weds Manu, Tere Bin Laden, Mumbai Cutting, Samay: When Time Strikes, Besharam and Rowdy Rathore are other noted works.  

 

He was born and brought up in Delhi. He completed graduation from Jamia Millia Islamia University in Delhi in 1996. It was during his college days when he met Samir Chanda, noted art director and later reached Mumbai with his business card. But he couldn’t meet this art director and he took up a job as a backdrop painter at Kamalistan Studios. After a few months he got opportunity to meet Samir, who took up him as his assistant for the Tamil flick, Iruvar directed by Maniratnam. The movie is best known as the debut flick of Aishwarya Rai where she was paired with Mohanlal. Later Wasiq assited Samir for movie Dil se; once again directed by Maniratnam.

 

Chanda also recommended his name to Anurag Kashyap, who gave him the first independent work -  Last Train to Mahakali, a short film aired on Star Plus in 1999. He worked with Kashyap for his debut movie, Paanch (2003) and has later worked with him for many projects. ‘Wanted’ was one of his earliest best works which opened him doors to masala movies. Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela, Bhootnath returns, Raanjhanaa and Debangg just followed it.
