Vishnu Prabhakar Biography

Vishnu Prabhakar was a noted Hindi writer who contributed in the form of stories, novels, plays, memorials, essays, children’s literature and travelogues to the world of Hindi literature. His works have strong influence of patriotism and nationalist feeling. He was honoured with the Padma Bhushan by the Government of India in 2004 for his novel Ardhanarishvara. The same work earned him Sahitya Akademi Award in 1993 too. He was also a recipient of Mahapandit Rahul Sankrityayan Award for the year 1995. He created news in 2005 when he declared to return back Padma Bhushan, following misconduct at Rashtrapati Bhavan. Aawara Masiha is his biography work on famous Bengali author, Sharatchandra and he travelled extensively 14 years to collect its data. Ardhanarishwar and Aawara Masiha are his celebrated works.

 

His real name is 'Vishnu Dayal' as per school records. Prabhakar was born on 21 June 1912, in the Mirapur village of UP. His father, Durga Prasad, was a religious person and his mother Mahadevi, was the first well-educated lady of the family. After primary education at his village, he was sent to his uncle’s home at Hisar where he completed his matriculation. He joined the government service after studies, to financially support the family. Yet he continued his studies side by side earning many degrees.

 

His first story ‘Diwali’ was published in the Hindi Milap in 1931. Hatya Ke Baad (1939) was his first play. Then he turned a writer full-time and stayed with his uncle till he reached 27. Vishnu Prabhakar has been associated with AIR as a drama director during 1955-1957. Prabhakar was deeply influenced by Mahatma Gandhi's principals of non-violence and he also read world classics. He was influenced by Munshi Premchand and Sharatchandra too. His wife Sushila Prabhakar was his true source of inspiration. She passed away in 1980. He passed away on 11 April 2009 aged 96. As per his last wish, his body was donated by his sons to AIIMS, New Delhi.
