Vishalakshi Dakshinamurthy Biography

Vishalakshi Dakshinamurthy is a popular writer of Kannada language. Her works include - Novels, non-fiction and classical. She is a recipient of several literal awards including Aryabhata Award for her literary contribution to Kannada novel and cinema. She has 64 novels to her credit. Many of her novels have been used for television serials as well as magazines. Vyapthi-Prapthi is her most popular work that has been made to a Kannada blockbuster movie, Jeevana Chaitra, lead role played by superstar Rajkumar. This movie is counted as his comeback after a gap of 3 years. A few of her noted novels include - Vyapthi Prapthi, Antharangadha Kare, Kallu Bombe Karagitu, Patangagalu, Olidu Ondadavaru, Srivanitheyarasane and Vasumati.

 

Vishalakshi was born to Nanjamma Srinivasa Rao and Srinivasa Rao.T.V on November 16, 1938 in Challakere, Karnataka. She lived in a traditional joint family. She lost her father at the age of 3 and thus she had a hard childhood. She had 4 siblings and her mother was the fourth wife of her father. Due to financial troubles, she discontinued her studies. At a younger age of just 12, she got married to B.V. Dakshina Murthy. After marriage she got settled at Bangalore. Her husband noticed her love to novels and he encouraged her to write. She used to send short stories to Taranga magazine which became immensely popular. Vishalakshi received many offers to make her story to be published as novel. Thus she wrote her first novel. She has been a regular story writer of Sudha and Taranga during 1960’s and 1970’s and her stories/novels used to run for a year.

 

Vishalakshi, though belonged to Telugu speaking Brahmin family, she was attached to Kannada literature most. She is also niece of noted Kannada novelist T. R. Subba Rao (TaRaSu). Her husband, popularly known as B.V.D died in 2004 due to cardiac attack. After that she reduced her work considerably.
