Virender Sehwag Biography

Virender Sehwag is one of the leading batsmen in the Indian cricket team. He is right-handed opening batsman and right arm off-spin bowler. He holds the record for fastest triple century in the history of international cricket. He has crossed 300 runs in the Test cricket twice and shares this honor with three other batsmen of the world. He scored the fastest century of Indian ODI cricket in March 2009 from 60 balls.

 

He was born on 20th October 1978 in Haryana. His parents are Krishan and Krishna Sehwag. He has two elder sisters, Manju and Anju and one younger brother Vinod. He studied at Arora Vidhya School in Delhi and attended Jamia Milia Islamia College for graduation. He married Aarti Ahlawat in April 2004 and has a son Aryavir born on 18th October 2007.

 

He made his debut for Delhi cricket team in the 1997 season. He played for North Zone cricket team for the Duleep Trophy. Then he was selected for the U–19 team and became the regular member of the national team in mid 2001. In his debut ODI match, he scored one run against Pakistan in April 1999. So he had to be out of the team for next 20 months. The match with Sri Lanka in August 2001 gave him a break.

 

He scored his first century against New Zealand from 69 balls and got Man of the Match Award. Since then he could get a permanent place in the Indian national cricket team. He scored 299 runs totally in the 2003 Cricket World Cup with a top score of 82 against Australia in the final. He scored 114 against Bermuda in the 2007 World Cup and Indian team could score 413, the highest team total in the World Cup match.

 

He got the fastest ODI century against New Zealand on 11th March 2009, in just 60 balls. On 8 December 2011, he hit his maiden double century in ODI cricket, against West Indies, becoming the second batsman after Sachin Tendulkar to reach the landmark. His score remains the highest individual score in ODI cricket - 219 off 149 balls. In 2004, he became the only Indian to score triple century in Test cricket with 309 against Pakistan in Multan. He served as the captain of Delhi Daredevils in the first two IPLs. Then he quit this position and shifted this to Gautam Gambhir to concentrate more on his batting. He has won a number of awards including Arjuna Award and Padma Shree Award. He runs a vegetarian hotel, Shewag Favorites in Delhi.
