Vinod Johri Biography

Vinod Johri is an Indian astrophysicist and eminent cosmologist. He is a retired professor of astrophysics at Indian Institute of Technology and a professor at Lucknow University since 1995. Till now, he has published more than 75 research works and articles in several leading magazines. He has spent more than 45 years in cosmology researches and acted as a guide also. 'Power law inflation, genesis of quintessence fields of dark energy and phantom cosmologies' is the most significant contribution given by this astrophysicist. Along with C.Mathiazhagan he has authored the first model of 'power law inflation in Brans-Dicke Theory’.

 

Johri was born in Etah, UP on 10 June 1935. His father Dr. Bhairon Prasad Johri was a Livestock Officer while his mother, Sarojini Johri was a home maker. Johri completed his High School at Narain College, Shikohabad. He was awarded First Prize in Chiranjeevi Dhiri Singh Provincial English Debate. He graduated in 1953 and completed post graduation in Applied Mathematics in 1956 from Allahabad University with excellent marks. Next year he became the Assistant Professor in the Department of Mathematics Allahabad University. In 1960 he became the Assistant Professor in Mathematics at Gorakhpur University, from where he took PhD in 1966.

 

In 1967 Vinod Johri worked on on cosmological problems with Dr.Dennis Sciama and a few research scholars at Cambridge University for which he was awarded Commonwealth Fellowship. Johri was elected a Fellow of Royal Astronomical Society of London in 1978 and has also worked as a consultant for UNDESCO during 1970-1972. He became Professor of Cosmology at the Mathematics Department of Indian Institute of Technology in 1980 and in 1984 he discovered the first model of 'power law inflation' under Brans-Dicke Theory along with his student C.Mathizhagan. Apart from his contributions to science, he uses his leisure time to write poems in Hindi, English and Urdu.
