Vinil Mathew Biography

Vinil Mathew is a Kerala born film director who works in Bollywood. He made his Bollywood debut through 2014 commercial hit - Hasee Toh Phasee. The movie received critics’ appreciation as well. The movie starred Parineeti Chopra, Sidharth Malhotra and Adah Sharma in the lead roles. The film was produced by Karan Johar and Anurag Kashyap. Vinil has the experience of over 250 ad films before he plunged into the magic world of Bollywood.

He was born to a Malayali family in Delhi in 1977. His father was an IAS officer. Since school days, he liked Santosh Sivan’s works a lot. Though he pursued graduation in Economics, he left home at the age of 17 as his parents were not supportive in his decision to enter film field. He worked as an assistant of Bharath Bala during his college holidays and returned back to complete his studies. Later he did direction course at Film and Television Institute of India, Pune. He reached Mumbai in 2000 where he started his career as an ad director with Highlight Films. In between he also worked as an assistant to Prasoon Pandey. In 2002 he launched his ad production company Nomad Films. But it was not a profitable business and he continued with directing ad films. He has also worked under Santosh Sivan and Bharath Bala in Bollywood.

He got opportunity to work with Karan Johar for an ad film campaign and that’s how he made his film debut under Karan Johar’s production. He was also the scriptwriter of his maiden directorial venture, Hasee Toh Phasee. He is known as an emotional filmmaker of Bollywood with a humour touch.
