Vimcy Biography

Vilayattasseri Mullambalath Balachandran, popularly known as Vimcy was a sports writer from Kerala who is considered to be the pioneer of sports journalism in Kerala. In a journalist career spanning to about 50 years, he has received numerous honours and awards. He had a long term association with Mathrubhumi newspaper and he was the sport writer who started an entire page for sports, at a time when little preference was given to sports in Kerala newspapers. He used pen name, Thampi to write articles in Sanjayan and Viswaroopam during the first phase of his journalist career. Balachandran was married to Amminiyamma and had three children – Unnikrishnan, Vijayakrishnan, and Meenakshi Sadanandan.

 

Vilayattasseri Mullambalath Balachandran was born on November 25, 1924 at Thamarassery, Kozhikode, Kerala. He was born to Dr. Narayanan Nair and Narayani. He was not able to complete his studies following ill health. He couldn’t finish his intermediate education at Palakkad Victoria College and later joined as a journalist in Kozhikode newspaper Dinaprabha in the year 1949. He also wrote articles in Sanjayan and Viswaroopam under the pen-name of Thampi. In 1950, he became the assistant editor at Mathrubhumi and thus happened his long term association with this leading Malayalam newspaper and he retired in the year 1984.

 

After his retirement from Mathrubhumi in 1984, he became associate editor for Calicut Times. Yet, as a guest writer he continued writing sports column with Mathrubhumi. He also wrote sports columns for Calicut Times and Madhyamam after his retirement. He wrote an autobiography work titled, Valkkashnam published in the year 2008. He has been honoured by Kerala State Sports council for lifelong contributions to the field of sports journalism. M.P. Paily award, Neelambaran Memorial award, T. Aboobacker award and Press Academy Silver Jubilee award are the other major awards.
