Vikram Bhatt Biography

Vikram Bhatt is a famous director and producer of Bollywood mostly known for horror and thriller movies. Raaz series exclusively belong to him. He has tried every genre and has chosen every subject for film making – from romance and comedy to horror and action. Yet he was most successful with horror movies. His big hits include – Raaz, Raaz – the mystery continues, Raaz 3D, Fareb, Kasoor, 1920, Shapid, Haunted, Ghulam, Gunegaar and Awara pagal deewana. His much awaited project with Amisha Patel and Hritik Roshan was a big failure at box office – Aap mujhe ache lagne lage (2002) though its songs became huge hits.

 

Vikram Bhatt is the son of cinematographer Pravin Bhatt. His grandfather Vijay Bhatt was also a great filmmaker of yesterdays who produced films like Goonj udi shehnai and Baiju bawra. Vikran Bhatt started his career as an assistant at age of 14. He assisted Anand in his first film, Kanoon Kya Karega and their association was green still his last movie – Agneepath. He has also assisted directors Mahesh Bhatt and Shekhar Kapur during his early days. Films include Junoon and Hum hai rahi pyar ke.

 

As a director, Vikram Bhatt debut with Jaanam in 1992. Then he did a string of movies like Madhosh, Gunegar, Fareb, Ghulam etc during 90’s. He has done only one movie with Aamir Khan – Ghulam and the movie was one among the biggest hits of 1998. He did one movie with Shah Rukh Khan, Bambai ka babu released in 1996. This movie was a flop.

 

With the success of Fareb and Ghulam, he began to do action thrillers. Kasoor starring Aftab Shivdasani and Lisa Ray also comes in this category of successful movies and his position as a director was well-established. The real history was yet to begin. Made with a very low budget of below 5 crores and shot in the beautiful locations of Ooty, the movie Raaz was the biggest hit of 2002. It collected around 40 crore rupees too, making it an all time blockbuster. He made two sequels of Raaz – one with Kangana Ranaut and the latest with Bipasha again. Yet still now Raaz remains a classic.
