Vijay Seshadri Biography

Vijay Seshadri is an Indian author, poet and critic who recently won Pulitzer Prize for poetry award in 2014 for his work - 3 Sections. He is the fifth Indian to receive this prestigious award. Currently settled in New York he is a Bangalorian who moved to US with his family at the age of five. Also known as an essayist and literary critic, he has also edited several books and publications. “The Disappearances” is one of his popular poems. His published literary works include - The Long Meadow (including The Disappearances), 3 Sections: Poems, New and Selected Poems and Wild Kingdom. "Rereading" (2012), "Visiting Paris" (2010), and "Thought Problem" (2009) are some of his poetry works published by the New Yorker. Many of his poems have appeared in many leading publications.

 

Vijay was born in Bangalore on February 13, 1954. Moved to US at the age of 5, he was brought up in Columbus, Ohio. His father worked as a faculty at Ohio State University. Vijay currently teaches poetry and nonfiction writing at liberal arts college Sarah Lawrence in New York. He regularly publishes his essays, poems and reviews in American Scholar, the Nation, the New Yorker, the Paris Review, Yale Review, the Times Book Review and many other leading magazines. He has also served as the editor of The New Yorker.

 

The Long Meadow and Wild Kingdom (1996) earned him James Laughlin Award. He has also received grants from the New York Foundation for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts. He has been influenced by Walt Whitman, Emily Dickinson, Elizabeth Bishop, and William Blake, for his literal career. ‘The Disappearances’ is his celebrated poem which came to prominence following the infamous September 11 attacks in 2001 and was also included in the list of The Best American Poetry 2003.
