Vijay P. Bhatkar Biography

Vijay P. Bhatkar is an Indian scientist most known for his significant contributions that led to the development of Param supercomputers in India. He has played a major role in shaping India’s IT industry and India's computer magazine Dataquest has placed him among the star pioneers of Indian IT field. For his contributions to Indian IT field, he was awarded with Padmashri Award and Maharashtra Bhushan Award (highest recognition of the Government of Maharashtra) both in the year 2000. He received with the Saint Jnaneshwar World Peace Prize in 2010 from the World Peace Center and in 2012, he was honoured with Jindal Prize for science and technology and Sitaram Jindal Foundation Award. At present he holds many senior positions at different Indian organizations and universities.

 

Born on 11 October 1946 in Pune, he is known as Architect of PARAM series of Supercomputers. He developed the first Indian supercomputer, the Param 8000, in 1991. The PARAM series of supercomputers have been designed and assembled by the Pune-based Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC). In 1998 he developed its second updated version, Param 10000. He is also known as the architect of National Param Supercomputing Facility (NPSF), based on the principles of PARAM series of Supercomputers. At present, Bhatkar works on exascale supercomputing via the Capability, Capacity and Infrastructure on National Knowledge Network.

 

Vijay has also authored many technology books and research papers. Till now, 12 books have been published. He has also done 80+ technical and research papers that have been presented at several conferences and conventions. At present he is the Chairman of Board of Governors of IIT-Delhi, Chairman of ETH Research Lab, Founder Chancellor and Chief Mentor of Multiversity, Chancellor of D. Y. Patil University, and National President of Vijnana Bharati.
