Vijay Anand Biography

Vijay Anand was a well acclaimed film maker of Bollywood most known for cult classic – Guide released in the year 1965. He is a producer, screen writer, editor and actor also and his movies were released under their own home production - Navketan Films. He was the youngest of three brothers of Bollywood – Chetan Anand, Dev Anand and himself. Both his brothers were well known film makers of Bollywood and majority of films produced under Navketan Films, Dev Anand was the leading actor. His younger sister, Sheel Kanta Kapur, is the mother of versatile film director Shekhar Kapur who has won many National and international awards. Vijay Anand has worked as an actor a few Doordarshan serials of which the detective serial, ‘Tehkikat’ telecasted during 1993-94 was most popular. His character name was Detective Sam. He was affectionately called Goldie Anand by his fans.   

 

As a director he is most known for Dev Anand movies - Guide, Jewel thief, Nau do gyarah, Tere mere sapne, Kaala bazaar, Tere ghar ke samne and Johny mere naam and these movies are often termed as milestones in the career of these brothers. Though he was a well known scriptwriter and has acted in a few movies, he is most known as one of the most successful directors of Hindi cinema. As an actor he has worked for Tere mere sapne, Haqueeqat, Chupa rustam, Kora kaagaz and Chor Chor, of which Kora kaagaz needs special mention. He played lead role opposite Jaya Bhaduri and it was a remake of Bengali movie - Saat Pake Bandha (1963), with a hapy ending climax, an exception from its original. He debut direction with Nau do gyarah with Dev Anand and his future wife, Kalpana Kartik in the lead roles. The movie was shot in a short period of 40 days and marked his successful debut to Bollywood also.  

 

Apart from directing Dev Anand, he has also worked with Shammi Kapoor, Dharmendra, Rajesh Khanna, Vinod Khanna, Shatrughan Sinha and Amitabh Bachchan. He was the director of Teesri Manzil, a suspense thriller with Shammi Kapoor in the lead and the debut of R.D.Burman as a music director. It was his first non-Navketan film as a director. He won Filmfare awards best dialogue and direction for Guide in 1965. Though the movie was released with English version, it was not a success. He has also received best editor award for Johny mera naam. Other successful movies as a director are Chupa rustam, Blackmail, Ram Balram, Bullet and Rajput.

 

He has also directed a few Malayalam movies during the last phase of his career as a director - Snehikkan Samayamilla, Adavukal Pathinettu and Bandham. As a director, Main Tere Liye was his last movie, released in the year 1988. He faced opposition from his own family when he married his own niece much younger than him.
