Venkaiah Naidu Biography

Venkaiah Naidu is a prominent politician from Andhra Pradesh and is a leader of Bharatiya Janata Party. He currently serves as the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs; Urban Development and Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation under newly elected Narendra Modi’s cabinet. In Atal Bihari Vajpayee government he has served as the Union Cabinet Minister for Rural Development. He was the National President of the party from 2002 to 2004.

Naidu was born on 1 July 1949 in Chavatapalem, Nellore of Andhra Pradesh. He holds Degree in Politics & Diplomatic Studies from V.R. College and later completed LLB from Law College, Andhra University. He specialized in International Law. Since his younger days he has been associated with Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and during his college days, he was a prominent student leader of ABVP in the early 1970’s. He has also been elected as President of the Student’s Union during his college days. He actively participated in anti-corruption movement led by Jayaprakash Narayan and was also involved in the political activities of Emergency period in 1975.

He became the President of the Youth Wing of the Janata Party in 1977 and very soon rose to one of the prominent leaders of BJP with 1980’s. He got elected to state assembly from Udayagiri constituency in 1978 and got re-elected for his second term too. In 1998 he got elected to Rajya Sabha followed by 2004 and 2010. He served as Union Cabinet Minister for Rural development when Atal Bihari Vajpayee formed government in 1999. He introduced ‘Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana’ during his short tenure. In 2002 he got elected as the National President of the Bharatiya Janata Party.
