Vemuri Gaggaiah Biography

Vemuri Gaggaiah is a film and theater personality of Telugu entertainment industry known for portraying villain roles. His talents were best exhibited in the mythological characters, mostly antagonist’s cruel and horrifying roles. He was one of the prominent members of Bala Bharathi Nataka Samajam in Mylavaram in Krishna district, popularly known by the name - Mylavaram Theatre. This troupe was prominent during the period - 1913-28. He has also done playback singing for a few film songs - Po Bala Pommikan and Dhikkaramulu Saituna are still popular. His son Vemuri Ramaiah was also a stage actor who excelled in the role of Karna on stage.

 

Vemuru in Guntur district of Andhra Pradesh was his native place. He was born in the year 1895. He lost his father during childhood and was later raised by his elder brother who gave him primary education. In 1913, he married Rajalakshmi. He got attracted to theatre at a younger age and learnt music. He later joined Surabhi Drama Company as a stage actor. Later he joined the prominent theater troupe - Bala Bharathi Nataka Samajam, where he remained one of its leading members. Among his plays, his role as Yama in the play ‘Sati Savatri’ made him a household name. Hiranyakasipu in Bhakta Prahlada and Jalandhara in Sati Tulasi were his other prominent mythological roles.

 

It was C. Pullayya who spotted his talents and introduced him to Telugu cinema. Savitri in 1933 was his debut film, in which he portrayed his most memorable role as a stage actor on celluloid. It was followed by Kamsa in Sri Krishna Leelalu (1935) and the womanizer in Chandika (1940). Vemuri Gaggaiah died in 1955 aged 60.
