Vasundhara Das Biography

Vasundhara Das is an actress and a successful playback singer. She sings for south Indian movies as well as Bollywood and her association with A.R.Rehman has always created magic onscreen. As a playback singer her first big hit was Shakalaka baby of Muthalvan (Tamil) /Nayak (Hindi) pictured on Sushmita Sen. She has also sung the English wordings of the popular romantic song of Lagaan – Oh re chori, music by A.R.Rehman. It’s the time to disco of Kal ho na ho and Chale jaise hawaaein of mein hoon na are her other super hit songs. As an actress her leading role against Kamal Hassan in National Award Winning movie, Hey Ram needs special mention. She has also acted in a few more movies like Malayalam blockbuster Ravana Prabhu, opposite Mohan Lal. Monsoon Wedding (English) and Citizen (Tamil/Telugu) opposite Ajith also need special mention.  Apart from singing and canting, she is a lyricist and an environmentalist as well.

 

Vasundhara Das was born into a Tamil speaking family in Bangalore on October 27, 1977. She began training in Hindustani classical music under her grandmother Indira Das. Later she continued learning under Lalita Kaikini and Pandit Parameshwar Hegde. She was the lead singer of her college band. Her film career began as a singer and she debut onscreen playing Kamal Hassan’s second wife in Hey Ram. She has also acted in Bollywood movies – Kudiyon ka zamana alongside Rekha and other movies include, Ek Dastak, Film star and Pathar Bezubaan. She has also acted in Kannada movie - Lankesh Patrike.

 

Her chartbuster Bollywood songs include Shaka laka baby of Nayak, My heart is (Oh re chori) of Lagaan, Rabba Rabba and aaja gufaom mein aa of Aks, Chale Jaise Hawaein of Mein hoon na, It’s the time to disco of Kal ho na ho and Shut Up, Title track of No entry, Gustaakhiaan  of aakhein, Where’s the Party Tonight  of Kabhi alvida na kehna, Ashaon Ke Zuban Par of Mitr: My friend,  Bindas of Paisa vasool, Salaame  of Dhoom, Title track of Salaam Namaste, Aa Nachle of Ugli aur pagli and Door Se Pas of Musafir. ‘Ayyo pachikitu’ of Rhythm and ‘dating/secret of success’ of Boys were composed by A.R.Rehman.
