Vasanthi Devi Biography

Vasanthi Devi is an educationist, activist and politician from Tamil Nadu. A well-known educationist, she is the former vice-chancellor of Manonmaniam Sundaranar University (M S University) of Tamil Nadu. This educationalist is known for her fights for woman rights. Currently she is in spotlight for contesting in State Assembly elections from Chennai’s R.K. Nagar constituency, opposing current Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu - J. Jayalalithaa. She represents Thol. Thirumavalavan’s Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) Party. Shimla Muthuchozhan is DMK’s candidate and M.N. Raja, son-in-law of former AIADMK minister Aranganayakam is the BJP candidate in the same constituency.

She was born in Dindigul in 1938. At the age of 15 she moved to Chennai, where she completed higher secondary studies at Queen Mary's College. After completing her studies, she has served as a teacher and educationalist and held many decorative positions as well. Apart from education, she has given some significant contributions to the fields of human rights, gender and environment. Her entry to politics is quite unexpected and unplanned and only in 2016 as a contestant of state assembly elections on VCK ticket. She was requested on behalf of the alliance to contest from RK Nagar, which she accepted.

She has earlier served as the Chairperson of the Tamil Nadu State Commission for Women (2002-2005), Principal of Govt. Women’s College, Kumbakonam (1988-1990), Chairperson of the Institute of Human rights Education and Vice-Chancellor of Manonamaniam Sundaranar University. Retired from professional career she is currently 77 years old. As a candidate she wants to highlight the issues of education and liquor policy, which she is familiar with. It’s quite interesting that DMK, VCK and AIADMK parties have fielded female candidates for 2016 state assembly elections, and the polls are to be held on 16^th May, 2016.
