Vasanth is a noted Tamil film director and screenwriter. Earlier he has worked as a journalist. He made his directorial debut with blockbuster hit - Keladi Kanmani in 1990 in which S P Balasubrahmanyam and Radhika played lead roles. In 1995 he received Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Director for the movie, Aasai. Rhythm released in 2000, lead roles played by Arjun and Meena is another noted work of Vasanth. He has done only a few movies as director. In 2007, he received Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Storywriter for the movie, Satham Podathey.
Vasanth began his career as a journalist and short story writer. Later he became an assistant director of Tamil film industry. He has also appeared in bit roles in a couple of movies during 1980’s. Under K. Balachander he worked in 18 films including Sindhu Bhairavi and Punnagai Mannan. His debut movie, Keladi Kanmani released in 1990 ran 285-days at theatres and known for its breathless song sung by SPB. More than number of films, he concentrated on its quality and his second movie, following the blockbuster hit Keledi Kanmani was released in 1992 - Nee Pathi Naan Pathi. Its film title was derived from one of the hit songs of his debut movie.
Aasai released in 1995 is still regarded as his best work, the movie for which he received state awards. This movie is regarded as a trendsetter and ran for more than 200 days. The movie was produced by Mani Ratnam and Ajith and Suvalakshmi played lead roles. This movie was the first hit of Ajith and debut movie of Suvalakshmi. His next movie Nerrukku Ner produced by Maniratnam introduced Suriya to Tamil movies. In his next movie, he paired Jyothika and Suriya for the first time in Tamil cinema. The movie was Poovellam Kettuppar. Jyothika made a special appearance in his next flick – Rhythm. The music given by Rahman was a huge hit. Appu, Moondru Per Moondru Kaadhal, Hey! Nee Romba Azhaga Irukke and Satham Podathey are other movies.
