Vasant Sarwate Biography

Vasant Sarwate - a doyen of non-political Indian cartooning, is also known as a writer associated with Marathi publications.  Sarwate has also illustrated books of many notable Marathi writers like P L Deshpande, Vijay Tendulkar and Vinda Karandikar. Started practising the art of cartoons from a young age he is also known for promoting budding talents. He is an acclaimed an illustrator as he is a cartoonist. He is one among those cartoonists who also wrote extensively on this subject. Sarwate’s caricatures of literary celebrities are rated as masterpieces. He published four collections of cartoons apart from four books on this art form.

 

Vasant Sarwate was born in Kolhapur in Maharashtra in the year 1927. He is a civil engineering graduate from Pune University. After studies he worked with the Associated Cement Cos Ltd for more than 30 years and retired as Chief Design Engineer in 1987. He developed the passion of drawings and cartoons at a very young age. At the age of 17 he published his first cartoon in a Marathi magazine in the year 1944. Though he worked as an engineer for many years he didn’t give up his passion and doodled constantly. After his retirement he dedicated his full time to his passion.

 

As a cartoonist and illustrator, he has spent more than 6 decades in the field and has worked for many publishing houses of Maharashtra such as Mouj, Popular, Majestic and Rajhans. Till now he has drwn more than 4000 cartoons for different forms of publications. He also introduced many foreign cartoonists to Marathi readers through his articles. His illustrations for Vinda Karandikar’s book won the Kendra award for best illustrated children’s books. Sarwate currently lives in Vile Parle, Mumbai.
