Vani Jairam’s name is one among the most versatile and established playback singers of the golden era of Indian music. She has recorded more than 8,000 film songs in 14 different languages including all South Indian languages, Marathi, Oriya, Gujarati and Hindi.

Vani Jayaram was born in Vellore in Tamil Nadu, in a Tamil Brahmin family of musicians. Kadaloor Sreenivasa Iyengar, guru of her elder sister became surprised to see the grasping power of 5 year old Vani that he taught her a few Dikshitar kritis. From early childhood she dreamt of becoming a playback singer though she kept it in mind only. She learnt Carnatic music from Srinivasa Iyengar, T. R. Balasubramanian and R. S. Mani. Ustad Abdul Rahman Khan taught her Hindustani classical music. After her marriage to Jayaram she settled in Mumbai. It helped her to realize her dream in the form of Guddi.

In 1971, she debut playback singing through Guddi, music given by Vasant Desai. It’s for the two great songs she sung for Guddi that she is remembered most. She sung for new comer Jaya Bhaduri who played a teenage girl in this movie. A song based on the Hindustani raga "Miyan Malhar", instantly made her a household name in India. She was awarded the Tansen Samman, Lions International Best Promising Singer award, the All India Cinegoers Association award and All India Film-goers Association award for the Best Playback Singer in 1971. She sang a few more songs in Bollywood under great composers like Jaidev, Madan Mohan, R.D.Burman, O.P.Nayyar, Kalyanji Anandji, Laxmikant Pyarelal and Chitragupt before she shifted to south Indian movies. She won her single Filmfare awards for the song, Mere to giridhar gopal of the movie Meera, music given by Ravi Shankar.  She also won another nomination in the same year for the same movie - "Aeri Main To Prem Diwani".

After shifting to south around 1974, she became a popular choice to all major music composers of south India and she recorded numerous songs as well.  She won National awards for various songs in the years 1975 (Apporva ragangal) and 1980 (Shankarabharanam) and in the year 1991 for "Anathineeyara Hara" for the movie – Swathi Kiranam.
