Vanchiyoor Radha Biography

Vanchiyoor Radha is a noted character artist of Malayalam cinema, who predominantly worked during late 1960s and 1970s and has appeared in around 350 movies, portraying distinct roles. Chandrahasam, Mudramothiram and Abhinayam are among her noted roles. She was quite active during 1970s portraying sister and mother roles. This talented actress entered film scene after a glorious theatric career. She is married to Narayanan Pillai and they have two sons. She is currently settled in Chennai.

A resident of Thiruvananthapuram, Radha has been a stage actress who was encouraged a lot by her uncle Padmanabha Pillai. At the age of 10, she became a voice actor for radio plays. It was her first step to an illustrious career. Gradually she got attracted to theatre and became a stage actress. Sri Kainikkara Padmanabha Pillai’s Vidhi Mandapam, where she portrayed the role of Aramula Ponnamma’s daughter was her first role appreciated by audience. Later she got small roles on film screen. Though minor roles, she accepted. Meryland’s Ponkathir was her debut film. She was also seen in the character role of Kumadam in Malayalam’s first full-fledged comedy film – Viruthan Shanku.

She got married to Sree Narayana Pillai from Thiruvananthapuram and took a small break from acting. However her passion to theatre prompted her to join KPAC, the leading professional theater troupe of Kerala. Mudiyana Putran – marked her association with KPAC, where she worked for two years and later she got associated with many other troupes too. Though she has been a glowing star of theater her passion to cinema prompted her to move to Chennai and she got full support from her husband. ‘Vidyardhikal’ in 1966, where she played Prem Nazir’s sister role was her first break and since then she got noticed for her screen presence for more than 350 movies she acted.
