Vamsy Biography

Vamsy, also pronounced as Vamsi is a veteran film director and music composer of Telugu cinema. This versatile story teller is known for critically well acclaimed movies and widely regarded as one among the 4 pillars or foundation corner stones of Telugu film industry, the other three being Viswanath, Bapu and Jandhyala. Vamsy started his film career in the early 80’s and has completed 3 decades in the film industry. Vamsy is known for introducing many newcomers and promoting budding talents in film industry, best instances being Rajendra Prasad, Bhanupriya, Vani Viswanath, Hamsa Nandini etc. Ilaiyaraaja has been associated with most of Vamsy’s early movies and his second innings started with super hit music of Chakri.

 

Vamsi’s full name is Nallamilli Bavireddy and he was born in the year 1956 in Pasalapudi village near Ramachandrapuram. He worked as an assistant director to K Viswanath on Sankarabharanam before starting his career as an independent director. Manchupallaki (1982) which starred Chiranjeevi, Suhasini, and Rajendra Prasad in pivot roles marked his successful debut. He introduced Bhanupriya to the Telugu Film Industry through his second venture – Sitaara released in 1984. This movie won National award for best regional film. His third movie, Anveshana which again starred Bhanupriya in lead role is regarded as his best thriller up to date.

 

It was rumoured that he fell in love with actress Bhanupriya and many of his movies turned to be commercial failure following this love failure. He has also directed a TV serial named Lady Detective for ETV-Telugu during mid 1990’s. His latest released movie is Tanu Monne Vellipoyindi, which starred Ajmal Ameer and Nikhitha Narayan in lead roles. His second innings movies include - Avunu Valliddaru Ista Paddaru, Saradaga Kasepu, Anumanaspadam and Gopi Gopika Godavari.

 

This director is known for portraying the scenic beauty of Godavari and surrounding regions in his movies.  As a writer he started his literal journey in 1974. He wrote a series of 72 short stories titled ‘Maa Pasalapudi Kathalu’ in a popular weekly and this work was compared to R. K. Narayan’s Malgudi Days in those days. Vamsy recreated an existing Pasalapudi village through his collection of short stories. His writing style often invites a satire touch. He has published more than 200 short stories and 6 novels till now.
