Valsala Menon is a veteran actress of Malayalam cinema, known for portraying character and supporting roles. She has portrayed numerous mother and grandmother roles in Malayalam cinema, apart from television. She entered film world as a child artist in the year 1953 with the name - Baby Valsala for the movie Thiramala and has completed long 60 years in the film industry. She has acted in more than 150 movies belonging to Malayalam and Tamil, apart from a few television serials to her credit. Apart from mother and grandmother roles, she has also portrayed several step-mother and the evil mother-in-law roles.
Valsala was born and brought up in Thrissur. She was born as the youngest child of the family and she has three elder brothers. She started her film career at the age of 8 with the movie, Thiramala released in 1953. She started training in classic dance forms at the age of 3. It was her father who recognized her talents. She got married at the age of 16 and her husband was an engineer working in Mumbai. After marriage she lived in Ghatkopar, Mumbai where she started her career as a stage artist. She got encouragement from her spouse as well.
The couple also started a drama troupe named Kalamandir. She took a break of 6 years to bring up her three children and later fully associated with the world of theatre and cinema. She became fully engaged in the world of cinema only after her children reached college and she is now active in both Malayalam and Tamil film industry. She is active in the film industry since 1980s. Her husband passed away in 1990.
