Vakkom Majeed Biography

Vakkom Majeed was a freedom fighter, politician and a former member of the Travancore-Cochin State Assembly. His real name is S. Abdul Majeed. Majeed is regarded as a politician extraordinary in the socio-political realm of Kerala in the 20th century. Noted social leader Vakkom Moulavi was his uncle, who inspired him to join social service and politics. Moulavi was a journalist and the proprietor of Swadeshabhimani newspaper also. Majeed was a political leader who believed in politics - value-based, secular and humanistic.

 

Majeed was born in Vakkom of old Travancore on 20 December 1909. He was born into a well-known Muslim family 'Poonthran Vilakom' and had 3 siblings. Social reform movement became a part of his life when he got attracted to his uncle Vakkom Moulavi and spiritual leader, Narayana Guru, two great personalities of social services in Kerala. He became one of the forefront leaders of Indian National Movement, when it was born in Kerala. Majeed was one of the few Congress leaders in Travancore who participated in Quit India Movement and got arrested. When the idea of “independent Travancore” was mooted, Majeed opposed it. He was against Two-Nation Theory and Pakistan movement also. It was Majeed who brought the last letter of INA hero Vakkom Kadir from Madras Central jail, a few days before he was hanged by British.

 

1948, he was unanimously elected to the Travancore-Cochin State Assembly from the Attingal constituency. When his term of 4 years was just to complete, he started reading works of great authors. He valued the ideas of ‘casteless society’ put forward by Narayana Guru. In 1972, during the Silver Jubilee celebration of Indian Independence, nation honoured him with Tamrapatra' for his participation in the Indian independence movement.
