Vaibhavi Merchant Biography

Vaibhavi Merchant is a popular choreographer of Bollywood movies at present. She was a judge of Hritik Roshan’s reality program based on dance, Dance Dance aired on Star television. She has also judged the show Nach baliye season 3. Vaibhavi Merchant is the granddaughter of greatest choreographer of yesterdays, B. Hiralal.

She began her film career working as the assistant of Chinni Prakash. Her first solo work as a choreographer is Hum dil de chuke sanam and the song is ‘Baje re baje re dol baje’. The song is still remembered for its nice footsteps choreographed on the basis of Gujarati folk dances. She won National award for this lovely choreographed song too. Then she debut movies as a heroine in the Malayalam movie – Snehapoornam Anna in the year 2000. The movie was a flop and she returned back to dance world. Her next movie was Lagaan and the song was O re chori. Then she continued to do selected songs for hit movies like Devdas, Aaja nachle, Dil bole hadippa, Don2, Kurbaan, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, Luck By Chance, Kambaqt ishq, Jhoom Barabar Jhoom, tara rum pum, Krisshh, Umrao Jaan, Swades, Kyun! Ho Gaya Na..., Na Tum Jaano Na Hum, Albela, Baghban, Lakshya, Band baaja baarat, Dilli 6, Fida, Dhoom, Dil chahta hai,  Veer Zaara, Aaja Nachle, kal ho na ho, Ayya, jab tak hai jaan, Ek tha tiger and Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi. The popular song of the movie Bunty aur bubli, pictured on Amitabh Bachcha, Abhishek Bachchan and Aiswarya Rai was choreographed by Vaibhav Merchant.

She has choreographed some fine songs of Aiswarya Rai like Crazy kiya re, Kajra re and Dhol baaje. Her other top choreographed songs include – Bairi piya of Devdas, Meri makhna of Bhagpan, Agar mein kahoo mujhe tumse mohabbat of Lakshya, Crazy kiya re of Dhoom, Mahi ve of Kal ho na ho, Haule haule of Rab ne bana di Jodi, Masakali masakali of Dilli 6, Mein to anvi anvi of Band baaja baarat, Mein to adat se machboor of Vicky Vs Ladies, Jaane kyon log pyar of Dil chahta hai and Aaja nachle title track.   

She has been nominated at Filmfare once though she is not able to win till now. Song was her debut song – Dol baaje of Hum dil de chuke sanam. Kajra re song gave her two awards - Apsara Awards and IIFA for Best Choreography. She won IIFA Awards for Aaja Nachle.
