V. S. Sivakumar Biography

V. S. Sivakumar is Minister for Health, Family Welfare and Devaswom of Kerala at present (August 31, 2013). He works for Indian National Congress and has defeated V. Surendran Pillai of KC(T) party in 2011 State Election to win his seat from Thiruvananthapuram constituency. He has served the state as a MLA earlier also and was elected to 13th Lok Sabha in 1999. He is one of the most influential congress leaders from South Kerala. He has served the party as Indian National Congress DCC President, AICC Member, KPCC Member and general secretary.

V.S. Siva Kumar was born in Amaravila on 30 May 1960. He was born to Shri K.V. Sadasivan Nair and Smt.B. Subhadra Amma. He completed his studies from VTM NSS College Dhanuvachapuram and LLB from Law Academy, Law College, Thiruvananthapuram. He started his political career through the Kerala Students Union (KSU) in 1978 while he was studying in Veluthampi Memorial NSS College. He became active in Youth Congress and was elected the Chairman, Students’ Union of the college in 1979-80.  

In 1978-79, he became University Union Councillor of Kerala University. During the period 1980-1982 he served as General Secretary of Block Congress Committee.  From 1982-1987 he was the President of Block Youth Congress, Parassala Block.  From 1987 to 1993 he was the Vice-President of District Youth Congress Committee, Thiruvananthapuram. From the period 1993-2000, he served as the President of Thiruvananthapuram District Youth Congress.  During the couple of years, 1999-2000 Sivakumar was the Member of Committee on Science and Technology, Environment and Forests.

Though he has won three times from Thiruvananthapuram, he got the opportunity in Minister’s cabinet only once. He was sworn in as the Minister for Transport and Devaswom on May 18, 2011 in the Oommen Chandy Ministry 2011-2016. Later in the first cabinet reshuffle, he was made the Minister for Health, Family Welfare and Devaswom. Now he resides at Shastamangalam, Capital city along with his family.
