V. S. Achuthanandan Biography

V. S. Achuthanandan is a senior Indian politician who served as the Chief Minister of Kerala. His full name is Velikkakathu Sankaran Achuthanandan. He was a Marxist communist member from 1985 and in July 2009, he was reverted to the Central Committee of the party as his ideological dispositions changed. He is very popular in Kerala and all over India as he is one of the founders of the CPI (M).

 

He was born on 20th October 1923 in Alappuzha district of Kerala. His parents are Sankaran and Accamma. He lost his mother when he was just four and his father when he was eleven. So he could not continue his education after eighth standard. The early years of his life was marked with extreme poverty. He worked in a tailoring shop and then in the coir factor meshing coir to make ropes.

 

He was able to enter into the politics through the activities of trade union and joined the Congress in 1938. In the year 1940, he became the member of the Communist Party of India. In his life as a politician, he had to spend five years, six months in jail. He became the state secretariat member of CPI in 1957. He formed CPI(M) along with other 32 members. The Poliburo suspended him on May 26 2007. Though he was completely removed from Politburo on account of his public speeches, he was allowed to continue as the Chief Minister of Kerala.

 

He was elected for Kerala Legislative Assembly in the elections of 1967, 1970, 1991, 2001, 2006, 2011 and 2016. He served as the editor of the Malayalam daily, Deshabhimani. In 2011 Assembly election he was not given seat initially by CPI (M). After protests, he contested from Malampuzha Constituency and won with a very high margin.

 

In the 2016 Kerala Legislative Assembly election, the Left Democratic Front (LDF) secured a huge win with a total of 91 seats in 140 assembly constituencies. At the age of 92, VS travelled across the state campaigning for the party with much vigour. V S Achuthanandan also contested this election from Malampuzha constituency, where he won by a margin of 27,142 votes. Being the face and most recognizable leader of the front, he staked his claim to be the next Chief Minister. However, the State and Central leadership appointed Pinarayi Vijayan as Chief Minister instead.

 

Achuthanandan was appointed as Chairman of the Administrative Reforms Commission on 3 August 2016.

 

He had to face few struggles with Pinarayi Vijayan, the head of the coalition party. V. S. Achuthanandan is criticized for insensitive comments using abusive languages. He took action against encroachment in Munnar and always support free and open source software especially for educational purposes.  He is an open atheist.
