V. R. Khanolkar Biography

V. R. Khanolkar was an Indian pathologist who was famous for his contributions to the medical field. He contributed to the field of epidemiology and expanded his research about cancer, leprosy and blood groups. He was called as Father of Pathology and Medical Research in India.

 

He was born on 13th April 1895 in Gomantak Maratha Samaj Family. He studied at the University of London and got his degree in Medicine. He got his M. D. in pathology in the year 1923. He started his career as the Professor of Pathology in Grants Medical and seth G. S. Medical Colleges.

 

He served as the director of laboratories and research in the Tata Memorial Hospital. He was appointed as the national research professor of medicine by Government of India and he was in this position for about ten years. He organized the Indian Cancer Research Centre and served as its director until 1973.

 

He had written and published three books on cancer and leprosy and had published hundreds of scientific research papers. He served as the founder president of Indian Association of Pathologists and Microbiologists.

 

He received Padma Bhushan award in the year 1955 for his service to humanity. He was the member of United Nations Scientific Committee on the effects of atomic radiation, World Health Organization panel on cancer and leprosy, Council of Scientific and Industrial Research and served as the President of International Cancer Research Commission from 1950 to 1954 and President of the International Union Against Cancer. He served as the Vice-Chancellor of Bombay University from 1960 to 1963.

 

He published Diagnosis of Leprosy, Indian Journal of Dermatology, Venereology and Leprology, Smoking and Chewing of Tobacco in Relation to Cancer of the Upper Alimentary Tract, Non-Specific Training of Antibody Production, etc. He died on 29th October 1978. National Academy of Medical Sciences established Dr. V. R. Khanolkar Oration in 1987 to honor its first president.
