V. M. Vinu Biography

V. M. Vinu is a Malayalam film director known for the commercial hits like Vesham, Baalettan, Yes Your Honour, Mayilattam, Kanmashi and Makante Achan. He has worked with almost all leading actors of Mollywood and brought to silver screen together for the first time Sreenivasan and Vineeth Sreenivasan and it happened through the movie – Makante Achan. Face2Face, Pallavur Devanarayanan, Vesham and Bus conductor are his works in association with Mammootty. He has directed 13 movies up-to-date.

Vinu belongs to Kozhikode, born in a middle class family. His father is a noted artist, dramatist and novelist. Vinu has been a part of All India Radio Malayalam dramas while at school. After graduation from Calicut University, Vinu took BTA from School of Drama. He has been a part of many art and cultural festivals while at college. He has won several prizes for best actor and best director too. Vinu started off his film career as an assistant film director in 1980s and has worked under many famous film directors. He has also worked as an associate director before starting his career as an independent film director. He has assisted Raveendran for the highly acclaimed and award winning movie, Ore Thuval pakshikal in the late 1980s. Mammootty starrer Sooryamanasam (1992) is other noted work.

Harishchandanam (1993) was his first movie as a film director, followed by Swarnakireedam, Oro Viliyum Kathorthu and Ancharakalyanam. But all these movies went unnoticed. He gathered attention for the first time through the movie - Pallavur Devanarayanan (1999). The movie starred Mammootty and Sangeetha in the lead roles. His first major hit was Mohanlal starrer Baalettan.
