V. Krishnaswamy Iyer Biography

V. Krishnaswamy Iyer was an Indian lawyer and High Court judge of Madras. He is the first Indian to have a beach-fronted statue, and his statue was installed outside the Senate House, Madras University in 1912 one year after his death. An educationalist too, he was the Founder of The Venkataramana Ayurveda College & Dispensary and The Madras Sanskrit College. He also set up Indian Bank. V. Krishnaswamy Iyer Street, a prominent street in Mylapore is named after him. Noted politician and statesman C. R. Pattabhiraman started his professional career as an apprentice under him.

 

Venkatarama Iyer Krishnaswamy Iyer was born into a lower middle class family on June 15, 1863. He hailed from Thiruvidaimarudur of Thanjavur district. He had three brothers. He lost his mother at a younger age and later his father remarried. His schooling was done from his native village and Thanjavur. Prominent administrator and lawyer, P. S. Sivaswami Iyer was his classmate at school. He passed matriculation with distinction in 1877. Though he joined Kumbakonam Govt. College for graduation, he shifted to Mylapore during his second year at college. By that time he had married and the couple lived in a rental home in Mylapore. He was financially helped by his elder brother. He completed graduation from Presidency College, Chennai and obtained a law degree from Madras Law College.

 

Iyer began practising as a lawyer in 1885. He rose to a prominent position throughout years and later served as High Court judge of Madras in 1909. He became a Member of the Executive Council, Madras Presidency in 1911. His role as an advocate in The Arbuthnot Bank crash and later events led to the formation of Indian bank, one of the leading financial banks of India. He started Venkataramana Dispensary and Ayurvedic College on Kutchery Road in 1905, and Madras Sanskrit College the following year. He was also a member of Congress party in the pre-independent India.
