V. K. Krishna Menon Biography

V. K. Krishna Menon was an Indian nationalist, diplomat and statesman and a powerful Indian personality. He was ranked second after his intimate friend, Jawaharlal Nehru as the most powerful man in India by Time magazine. Born in Kozhikode, Kerala he is regarded as the most powerful Indian politician and diplomat from Kerala. His decision making techniques have earned wide acclamation not only from India, but also from abroad. Even after about 4 decades of his death, Menon remains an enigmatic and controversial figure in Indian political map. He belonged to Indian National Congress and has served as Minister of Defense during the period, 1957-1962. He has been elected to both houses of the Indian parliament from constituencies of Maharashtra, Bengal as well as Kerala several times.

 

Menon was born at Panniyankara in Kozhikode as the son of advocate Komath Krishna Kurup. Menon had his early education at the Zamorin's College, Kozhikode. He graduated in Arts from Presidency College, Chennai. While studying in the Madras Law College, he became involved in Theosophy and was also associated with Annie Besant and the Home Rule Movement. He was a leading member of the 'Brothers of Service', founded by Annie Besant. In 1924, he went to England for future studies. He studied at University College, London and the London School of Economics. In 1930 Menon was awarded an M.A. in Psychology with First Class Honours. He continued learning and his formal education was completed at the age of 37. He associated with labour Party of London also.

 

Once returned to India, he worked as a journalist and as secretary of the India League from 1929 to 1947. He had a close relationship with Nehru. Menon was appointed high commissioner to the United Kingdom after Indian independence. He has represented India in many international events including India’s representative in United Nations.
