V. K. C. Mammed Koya Biography

V. K. C. Mammed Koya is an Indian politician, businessman and entrepreneur from Kozhikode, Kerala who is the founder of VKC Group (VKC Footwear), a leading footwear company of south India. A two-time MLA of Kerala Legislative Assembly, he is currently elected to state assembly in 2016 Assembly elections from Beypore constituency in Kozhikode. He defeated M.P. Adam Mulsi of UDF by 14363 votes. He belongs to Communist Party of India (Marxist). He was elected to state assembly earlier in the year 2001, where he served a term of five years. He is also a former mayor of Kozhikode Corporation.

 

He was born on 03 October 1940 in Nallalam, Kozhikode to Imbichi Mothi. He is married and has two sons and two daughters. Got associated with social activities since young, he joined Communist party (Marxist) in 1975. In 1979 he contested in Grama Panchayat elections and got elected as President of Cheruvannur-Nallalam Gram panchayat. He served the position till 1984. He also held the positions of director of Feroke Service Co-operative Bank Limited and the President of the Coir Vyavasaya Sahakarana Samkham during this period.

 

In 1995 he contested district Panchayat elections and served as Member and Vice President of District Panchayat. Director of Farook Service Co-operative Bank and Co-operative Homeo Hospital, Kozhikode and Member and Standing Committee Chairman, Kozhikode District Council in the year 1996, Chairman for the standing committee for Public works in the 1990s are the other major positions held by him. He won Kozhikode Jilla Panchayath Election again in 2000. In November 2015 he got elected as Mayor of Kozhikode Corporation. However he resigned his power to contest in state assembly elections and won it.

 

He was born into a poor family and his childhood days were spent in extreme poverty. He has worked as a tea seller and contract employee, and struggled for many years before he turned a successful entrepreneur. He also worked in a matchstick manufacturing company. Now his footwear brand VKC worth a turnover of Rs 1500-crore. Koya believes that it is his communist in himself which helped him to become a successful businessman. Low-cost good quality footwear, especially hawai chappals is widely accepted by Malayalis.
